CHINESE BANKNOTES
As "everyone"
knows, paper money was invented in China (unless one wishes to entertain
the Iranian claim - in Iran they claim to have invented everything including
speech and bipedal posture - and they may just be correct, anyway...).
For a couple of generations the scholars thought that it began as a Yuan
(Mongol) dynasty expedient to promote (and profit from) inflation, but
now printing blocks have been found with Tang legends, so we know that
paper money is about 1400 years old at least. This is beside the
point as far as this page goes.
Notes on this
page were printed directly by a government or a government sponsored bank,
or are otherwise listed in the major English language references.
