PAKISTAN, modern jewelry
There is a tradition in Pakistan and India of using decent quality stones in totally crummy metal settings to make "wearing" jewelry.  That would be the street stuff.  For a wedding you'd get out the gold (or rent it).

PNL1) PAKISTAN, fake amulet necklace, "silvered" brass, modern, on 17' beaded necklace, from NWFP, new, $9.50
The tradition is to have a protective amulet, in this context a text from the Qur'an, around your neck at all times.  The amulet case of this one is sealed with solder, leading to the thought that it is actually empty.  The theory might be that the wearer is illiterate anyway so what difference does it make?  "Fake amulet" jewelry is common in the amulet zone (everywhere?).  I have seen "amulet cases" that are solid - no inside to put something in.
