PORTUGAL
Portugal emerged as a country in 1143.  I've been looking for coins before, say, 1400, and I'm not finding many of them.  I guess that means they're rare.  It is a small country that had an enormous empire for a couple of centuries before becoming a small country again.  As I write this at the end of 2006 Portuguese coins are hot.
