PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Half of a very
large island, the other half being part of Indonesia. Human culture
is at least 15,000 years old there. Until very recently it was early
neolithic tribal, with more unrelated languages in one place than anywhere
else in the world. A very thin veneer of modern government and culture
has been sprayed on that base to facilitate the extraction of resources.
Many of the
numerous cultures facilitated trade with the use of various things not
coins or paper money. These things have been collected under the
organizing categories "odd-and-curious," "primitive money," and "traditional
money."

revised version of my World Coin News article on the coinage of this country.
