GUATEMALA,
Home of the ancient Maya civilization, and they are still there.  The currently popular theory is that their urban civilization was abandoned when they ran into a climate change and a peaking population and couldn't keep their civic act together.  Sound ominously familiar?  They didn't disappear though, and the Spaniards failed to "pacify" them for several decades.  Subsequent centuries of history involve oligarchic dictatorships occasionally interrupted with populist efflorescences.  A troubled nation.
