GUADELOUPE,
There was a time in the late 17th and early 18th centuries when Spain was the largest landowner in the world, though palpably on the way down, and England was fighting with France over who would be the number two challenger.  The two countries went at it around the world, planting their flags and shooting at each other when convenient.  We know who won.  The French held on to little dribs and drabs of colonies, added more in the 19th century, lost those.  What was left, a few islands in the Caribbean and the south Pacific, Guianne in South America, have been incorporated into France itself.  If you go to Guadeloupe today you are technically in France.
