ANCIENT ARABIAN COINS
Arabia has been inhabited by humans since homo erectus times, about half a million years ago.  Herodotus, in the 5th century BC, mentioned them as allies of the Persian empire.  In the later BC period large tribes built up territorial domains around port facilities on the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea and along the major caravan routes.  Foreign military intervention by Persians, Romans, etc. was sporadic and short lived.
In the ancient period what is now Jordan was also considered part of Arabia.
